KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 – Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti), Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, today denied being accompanied by his family on a trade mission to Europe in October.

During his ministerial closing speech, several members of Pakatan Harapan (PH) led by Jelutong MP RSN Rayer asked if Azmin had taken his family for the official trip and if it had been paid for by the ministry, and if they had traveled first class.

President Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, however, banned Rayer from asking about it, saying the topic was unrelated to the 2022 budget.

This sparked dissent from several of Rayer PH’s colleagues who justified his question as a matter related to the national budget.

“I simply asked for clarification on the delegation’s trip to London. Minister, this has even been reported in the news. Is it true that you brought your family and the ministry paid? Rayer asked.

Bangi MP and former Miti Deputy Minister Ong Kian Ming then stood up and explained the rationale for the question to Azhar, after which the latter left the answer to Azmin’s discretion.

“Each ministry has a budget for overseas travel and their missions as well. So what Jelutong asked is if the Minister has booked first class tickets, and price, for COP26 (Climate Change Conference 2021). I know that London to Singapore, and back to Malaysia, the price is indeed high. So give the minister a chance to respond,” Ong said.

Azmin later told the Dewan Rakyat that he would answer Rayer’s question, before denying that his family had been with him.

“I understand that Jelutong’s action is more about distracting attention from bigger issues. However, I have no problem answering the question raised.

“All expenditures for Miti’s trade mission followed financial rules and procedures. Indeed, before a trade mission is approved, it has to be tabled in Cabinet and everything – the list of the members of the delegation, the amount of the allowance, the expenses, the destination – all of this has been detailed and approved by the Cabinet, in accordance with financial rules and requirements. . I deny Jelutong’s accusation,” Azmin said.

Azmin left for his trade mission in October, scheduled between October 13 and 21, which also covered France and the United Kingdom

National news agency Bernama reported that the senior minister was accompanied by senior Miti officials, who aimed to demonstrate the Malaysian government’s business-friendly policies and capabilities in strategic areas, such as sustainability, high-end manufacturing range and industry 4.0.
