Company representatives began the mission in Munich with business meetings arranged by the US Consulate and facilitated by the Alabama District Office of the US Export Trade and Service Center.
The group then traveled to the IHK Schwaben in nearby Augsburg for the 11e session of the EU-US Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Best Practices Workshop, where several representatives from Alabama made presentations at roundtables.
Kirk Atkinson, President of Ada Internationalan industrial engineering and project management services company, said the trade mission had uncovered new opportunities for its Birmingham business.
“The Made in Alabama team organized an immersive trade mission for us to Germany. Not only did we meet, but we also started collaborating with new German customers and partners,” said Atkinson.
“At the IHK Schwaben EU-US SME Workshop, we discussed current challenges of international small and medium-sized enterprises and learned what our state and the German chambers of commerce can do to help,” he said. -he adds. “We came back with a new perspective and new opportunities for the future of Alabama and German business.”
Christina Stimpson, Trade Manager International Trade Officesaid that the SME workshop concluded with the announcement by the United States Office of Trade Representatives of the 12e annual workshop will be held in Alabama. Details are still being worked out, but the event is expected to take place next fall.
The business development trip to Germany was the first trade-led trade mission since September 2019, when a group from Alabama traveled to the United Arab Emirates.
“After two years of supporting virtual connections, trade shows and trade missions, it was great to drive companies from Alabama to Germany for our first post-COVID trade mission,” said Stimpson.
“With Alabama’s existing strong ties, Germany has created a great market for our 5 small businesses to explore business opportunities and participate in the 11e Annual EU-US SME Best Practices Workshop to better understand broader opportunities in the European Union,” she added.
